Following Up on the GHG Inventory for West Kutai, UGM Team Collects Cross-Sectoral Emissions Data

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through its team of experts, continues to support the Government of West Kutai Regency in the preparation of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory (IGRK) document. The activity was carried out through technical collaboration with various local government agencies and relevant institutions in West Kutai Regency from July 27–30, 2026.

The collaboration began with a technical coordination meeting between the UGM Expert Team and the West Kutai Regency Environmental Agency (DLH) on July 27, 2026. The meeting aimed to agree on the scope of activities, data sources, and emission reduction targets to be incorporated into the West Kutai GHG Inventory document. This process also served as an important step in aligning methodologies, perceptions, and data validation between the academic team and the local government. read more

UGM Graduate School Continues Its Commitment to Expanding Clean Water Access in Purworejo through Groundwater Potential Survey

Purworejo, 15 May 2026 – The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through a collaboration between the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Environmental Science, carried out a Community Service Program (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat/PKM) entitled “Empowering Deep Groundwater Resources to Meet Clean Water Needs through a Partnership-Based Approach in Purworejo Regency.” The initiative commenced with a field survey aimed at identifying the potential of deep groundwater resources as a scientific basis for developing sustainable clean water supplies for communities in Purworejo Regency. The program represents the implementation of UGM’s Tri Dharma of Higher Education, emphasizing the application of science and technology to address real-world community needs. read more

When Freshwater Turns Salty: UGM Environmental Science Master’s Students Investigate Seawater Intrusion in Rembang District

Rembang, June 21–25, 2026 – Students from the Abiotic (Physical) specialization of the Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted their 2026 Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL) in Rembang District, Rembang Regency, Central Java, focusing on the issue of seawater intrusion. The field study was supervised by Dr. Tjahyo Nugroho Adji, S.Si., M.Sc.Tech. Seawater intrusion is the process by which seawater infiltrates coastal groundwater aquifers, posing a largely invisible yet significant threat to drinking water quality, agricultural productivity, and public health. As a coastal area along the northern coast of Java, Rembang District is particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon due to intensive groundwater extraction for domestic consumption, fisheries-related industries, and agricultural activities. read more

REMBANG, June 26, 2026 – The existence of coastal areas along the Northern Coast of Java is currently facing multiple and dynamic pressures, ranging from geomorphological degradation and hydrometeorological hazards to disparities in settlement spatial planning. In response to these complex challenges, the Master of Environmental Science Program of the Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), once again deployed its students through the annual thematic Field Study Program (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan – KKL), conducted from June 22 to 25, 2026. Focusing on Rembang and Pati Regencies, this year’s field program integrated a multidisciplinary approach that combined biotic, physical, and social perspectives to identify adaptation potentials and formulate sustainable regional resilience strategies. read more

UGM and the University of Leeds Explore Double Degree Doctoral Program in Environmental Fields

Yogyakarta, June 8, 2026 – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the University of Leeds (UoL), United Kingdom, have initiated discussions on a potential academic collaboration through a Double Degree (DD) program at the doctoral level. The preliminary meeting was held online on Monday (June 8) and brought together representatives from the Faculty of Environment at the University of Leeds, along with faculty leaders, graduate program representatives, and related offices from UGM.

The meeting marked a strategic step toward strengthening international collaboration between the two institutions, particularly in areas aligned with the Faculty of Environment’s expertise, including transportation, environmental pollution, water resources, geology, and other environmental studies. Representatives from the University of Leeds included Prof. Dr. Guy Ziv (Professor in Socio-Environmental Systems), Prof. Dr. Zia Wadud (Professor of Mobility and Energy Futures), Dr Desy Ayu Pirmasari (Lecturer in School of Geography), and Matthew Butler, International Partnerships Officer. UGM was represented by leaders from the Faculty of Geography, Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School, Directorate of Global Relations and Partnerships (DKRG), and related doctoral programs. Environmental Hydrology Mini Project: Case Studies on Water Pollution

This activity aimed to apply concepts of hydrology and water pollution through field-based research on various water bodies experiencing environmental pressures caused by human activities. The students were divided into five groups, each assigned to different locations and research focuses, resulting in five case studies that illustrate diverse water quality issues across Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Bantul. read more

Observing Environmental Engineering in Practice: The Restoration of the Code River in Terban Village

In an effort to promote environmental awareness and foster a healthy aquatic ecosystem, students of the Master of Environmental Science Program conducted a working visit and public discussion in Terban Village on Tuesday (May 26). The activity highlighted the issue of pollution in the Code River and explored long-term plans for river rehabilitation and environmental improvement in the area.

The visit was attended by officials from the Terban Village administration, the Environmental Engineering course lecturer, Muhammad Sulaiman, S.T., M.T., D.Eng., and students from the Master of Environmental Science Program. The event began with a discussion on the general environmental conditions of Terban Village, followed by a presentation on the environmental development plans proposed by the Yogyakarta City Government for the coming years. During the session, students were encouraged to provide suggestions and recommendations for implementing greener and more sustainable environmental engineering strategies. read more

Learning Environmental Management from a Densely Populated Urban Area in the Code River, Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta (06/04) — Students conducted a field study as part of the Environmental Management course along the banks of the Code River in Yogyakarta, accompanied by Prof. Bakti Setiawan. The activity was designed as a contextual learning experience to understand directly how environmental management principles are implemented amid limited space and high urban population density.

In his introduction, Prof. Bakti explained that environmental management does not only concern the technical aspects of management but also encompasses social, economic, and spatial dimensions. One of the main issues observed was population and building density, reflected in the high ratio of building area to land area. This condition indicates significant pressure on the environmental carrying capacity, particularly in riverbank areas. In the case of the Code River, settlement patterns have developed organically, largely through the informal sector. “Here we can see how communities adapt to limited land availability, often without prior structured planning,” he explained. read more
