Environmental Management of Coal Mining as a Strategy for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Dr. Priyaji Agung Pambudi, S.Pd., M.Si., a lecturer in the Master of Environmental Science Program at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada, conducts research on environmental management in coal mining as a contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. Mining activities are known to potentially affect water and soil quality as well as overall ecosystem balance, thereby requiring comprehensive and periodic environmental monitoring. Environmental management in the coal mining sector is a critical aspect of climate change mitigation and ecosystem protection. Research conducted in Riau Province indicates that responsibly managed mining practices can maintain ecological stability while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). read more

Yogyakarta, 18 November 2025 — Students of the Master of Environmental Science Program (MIL), Universitas Gadjah Mada—Nurlaila Sahara Worabay, Baso Samsul Rijal, and Dina Aprilia—successfully achieved an outstanding accomplishment at the Poster Presentation & Seminar on The SDGs 2025, organized by the Division of Research and Knowledge, LPDP UGM. Carrying the theme “The Role of Students in Accelerating SDGs Achievement through Research, Innovation, and Creativity,” one MIL student was awarded the Favorite Poster for presenting an innovative study that offered significant contributions to sustainability issues. read more

Historically, energy demand has relied on fossil fuels, which requires a gradual transformation toward New and Renewable Energy (NRE). This transformation can begin with aspects of knowledge, human resources for management and development, as well as the availability of adequate infrastructure. Fossil fuel-based energy has contributed to global climate change and tends to cause global warming. An important aspect that must not be overlooked is that the development of NRE is strongly influenced by, and impacts, the social aspects of communities around NRE implementation sites. read more

UGM Research Team Conducts On-Site Survey for Smart City Research in IKN

In support of the development of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) as a sustainable smart city, the 2025 Fundamental Research Team from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a field survey from 11–16 August 2025. This activity is part of the 2025 Fundamental Research scheme with the theme: “Smart Waste Management Innovation and Systems to Support the Implementation of a Smart City in Nusantara Capital City.”

The research team was led by Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., a faculty member of the Department of Development Geography and Chair of the Regional Development Study Focus in the Master’s Program in Geography at UGM. She was assisted by two principal researchers: Prof. Dr. Eko Haryono, M.Si. (Department of Environmental Geography and Head of the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science at UGM) and Ir. The Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) officially launched the Odd Semester of Academic Year 2025/2026 by organizing a series of deficiency and field practice activities for students. These activities aim to strengthen interdisciplinary foundational knowledge and enhance students’ academic capacity in understanding complex and multidimensional environmental issues.

The one-week deficiency program featured experts from various disciplines, alumni, and UGM librarians, equipping students with essential knowledge on critical environmental issues such as climate change (SDG 13), clean water and sanitation management (SDG 6), terrestrial ecosystem restoration (SDG 15), clean and affordable energy transition (SDG 7), and partnerships for sustainable development goals (SDG 17). Dr. Sudrajat, the program coordinator, stated that the deficiency program serves as an important moment to align students’ understanding across diverse academic backgrounds and prepare them with a strong theoretical and conceptual foundation to advance their studies in environmental science and geography. read more

Yogyakarta, 5 August 2025 – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through its Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Environmental Science, held a meeting with a delegation from National Taiwan University (NTU) to strengthen international collaboration in education and research. The meeting, conducted at UGM’s Land Resources Study Center, was attended by Prof. Eko Haryono and Prof. Junun Sartohadi representing UGM, as well as Prof. Jr-Chuan Huang and Dr. Ci-Jian Yang from NTU.
