A Master’s student in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Enjang Asri, successfully presented his research abstract at the 2025 Sustainable Asia Conference (SAC 2025), organized by the Singapore University of Social Sciences at 29-30 October 2025. In this esteemed international forum, Enjang Asri delivered an abstract that emphasized the strategic importance of establishing a coordinated coalition for waste management initiatives in Yogyakarta. His presentation underscored the ongoing fragmentation among various stakeholders addressing waste-related issues in the region, noting that many actors continue to operate independently, thereby limiting the overall effectiveness of waste reduction efforts.

In support of the development of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) as a sustainable smart city, the 2025 Fundamental Research Team from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a field survey from 11–16 August 2025. This activity is part of the 2025 Fundamental Research scheme with the theme: “Smart Waste Management Innovation and Systems to Support the Implementation of a Smart City in Nusantara Capital City.”

The research team was led by Prof. Dr. Rini Rachmawati, S.Si., M.T., a faculty member of the Department of Development Geography and Chair of the Regional Development Study Focus in the Master’s Program in Geography at UGM. She was assisted by two principal researchers: Prof. Dr. Eko Haryono, M.Si. (Department of Environmental Geography and Head of the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science at UGM) and Ir. Agus Prasetya, M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D. (Department of Chemical Engineering, UGM).
The Master of Environmental Science Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapang, KKL) on Coastal Resilience in Pemalang Regency from 14–17 July 2025. The study analyzed beach cleanliness using the Clean Coast Index (CCI) and Hazardous Item Index (HII) across three strategic locations: Widuri Beach in Pemalang District, Joko Tingkir Beach in Petarukan District, and the Mojo Mangrove Essential Ecosystem (KEE) in Ulujami District. This research responds to the critical issue of anthropogenic marine debris along Indonesia’s coasts, particularly in Pemalang Regency, which has significant tourism and maritime economic potential.
The Doctoral Program in Environmental Science, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized an activity under the Lesser Sunda Expedition in collaboration with the Doctoral Program in Population Studies and the Doctoral Program in Geography. The target location of this expedition was the premium tourism area of Labuan Bajo. As part of the series of activities, an Interactive Talkshow was held between UGM representatives, partners, and alumni. The event, conducted on 3 July 2025, was attended by Prof. Eko Haryono and Dr. Sudaryatno along with the expedition participants, Dr. Leonard Chrysostomos Epafras (representing Public Relations and Collaboration of UGM Graduate School), representatives from Keluarga Alumni Gadjah Mada (KAGAMA) Manggarai Chapter led by Mr. Stefan, partners from Komodo National Park (TNK) represented by Mr. Ichwan, and academics from El Bajo Campus in Labuan Bajo.
The Graduate Program in Environmental Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized an environmental action initiative titled “Funtastic Without Plastic: Save Nature for the Future” as part of the World Environment Day 2025 commemoration, which carries the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event, held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Pelangi Beach, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, embodied the commitment of the academic community to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly those related to marine ecosystem protection and reducing the impacts of plastic pollution.
The Graduate Program in Environmental Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized a seminar titled “Funtastic Without Plastic: Save Nature for the Future” on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Parangtritis Geomaritime Science Park, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta. Held to commemorate World Environment Day 2025, which carries the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, the seminar brought together two distinguished speakers whose expertise complemented one another in addressing environmental challenges.
Students of the Environmental Science Master’s Program, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), once again made remarkable achievements beyond the academic sphere. Two postgraduate students, Dina Aprilia and Wahyu Febriani, successfully earned prestigious awards in events highlighting strategic issues in public health and cultural preservation.

Dina Aprilia, a student from Tangerang, achieved the Top 4 Favorite Position of Duta Kesehatan (Health Ambassador) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Her motivation to join the competition stemmed from her personal experiences and academic background in environmental studies, which are closely related to health issues.
Bantul (7 October) – From March to October 2024, the Master of Environmental Science Program carried out a community service program in Trimurti Village, Srandakan District, Bantul Regency. The program, themed innovation in rural waste management, is part of the 2024 Community Service Grant of the Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada, led by Prof. Dr. Ig. L. Setyawan Purnama, M.Si. The primary focus of the activity was to provide public outreach on the importance of effective and sustainable waste management.
On September 10, 2023, the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science initiated the 2023 Community Service (PkM) activities in Dukuh, Sinduharjo, Ngaglik, Sleman. In collaboration with the Anom Sari Youth Organization, the Environmental Group, and the Migunani Waste Management Self-Help Group, the PkM program was carried out through three main activities: a Waste Management Workshop, a visit to Omah Maggot Jogja, and assistance in the production of compost and organic liquid fertilizer (NPK). As a result of these activities, the “Migunani Maggot House” was established and continues to operate.
