June 8, 2025 — Graduate students of Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada conducted a field practicum for the course Environmental Policy and Regional Development. Supervised by Dr. Langgeng Wahyu Santosa, S.Si., M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Lutfi Muta’ali, S.Si., M.T., the activity took place across several sites, including the Opak Raya–Kalasan–Piyungan corridor, the ancient volcano of Nglanggeran, and the Ngingrong Karst area.

During the practicum, students carried out environmental analyses through observations of ecoregions, morphology and relief, geomorphological structures, landform formation processes, lithology, as well as the interrelations between natural conditions and human activities. The activity was designed to provide students with a contextual and comprehensive understanding of how landscape characteristics can serve as a foundation for formulating appropriate and sustainable environmental policies. read more

The Graduate Program in Environmental Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized an environmental action initiative titled “Funtastic Without Plastic: Save Nature for the Future” as part of the World Environment Day 2025 commemoration, which carries the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event, held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Pelangi Beach, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, embodied the commitment of the academic community to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly those related to marine ecosystem protection and reducing the impacts of plastic pollution. read more

The Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has adopted an innovative educational approach through the Environmental Hydrology course taught by Dr. Margaretha Widyastuti, M.T. The course is designed using a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, which encourages students to engage directly in mini research projects focusing on water degradation or pollution and their environmental impacts. Through this approach, students are organized into working groups that propose specific research themes, develop research proposals, conduct field observations and measurements, and analyze relevant secondary data. The learning outcomes include enhancing students’ awareness and sensitivity to water-related environmental issues, strengthening their research management skills, improving teamwork capabilities, and increasing their competence in delivering research findings through scientific reports and presentations. read more

The Environmental Science Master’s Program, Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted a field study for the course Soil and Environment in Margoyoso Village, Salaman District, Magelang Regency, on Saturday–Sunday, 3–4 May 2025. The activity was led by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Junun Sartohadi, M.Sc., and Dr. Muhammad Anggri Setiawan, S.Si., M.Si., with the aim of providing students with empirical experience in understanding the interactions between soil characteristics, land use, and their impacts on environmental quality as well as broader social implications. read more

On Saturday, 26 April 2025, nine students of the Environmental Science Master’s Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) took part in a field study at the Song Terus Site, the Song Terus Museum, and Tabuhan Cave in Pacitan, East Java. This activity was part of the Cultural Environment course taught by Dr. Dra. Niken Wirasanti, M.Si.

The field study aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the relationship between prehistoric humans and their natural environment, as well as how early cultural adaptations shaped their living spaces. Direct observations were conducted from 09.00 to 14.00 WIB, accompanied by a museum educator from the Song Terus Museum, Anjar Laksita, and technical staff member, Tulus Wahyudi. read more

The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), together with the Faculty of Geography UGM, officially signed a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Omar Al-Mukhtar University, Libya. This MoU marks the beginning of a strategic partnership in education and research among the three institutions. Prof. Eko Haryono, Lecturer and Head of the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), delivered a field lecture at the Green Mountain Plateau in Libya. The activity was part of his visit to Omar Al-Mukhtar University from 20 to 23 April 2025. The lecture aimed to share his insights and scientific perspectives on natural phenomena occurring in the karst region. The Doctoral Program in Environmental Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to strengthen the quality of its education and research through a benchmarking visit to several leading universities in Egypt. The visit was conducted by Prof. Eko Haryono, Head of the Doctoral Program, and Dr. Sudaryatno, Quality Assurance Coordinator of the program, on the sidelines of their participation in an international conference from April 12 to 19, 2025. Three prominent universities were visited: Cairo University, Suez University, and Ain Shams University. read more

Initiated by the International Geographical Union (IGU), the conference was held in Egypt from April 12–19, 2025. This international event brought together scholars and experts from around the world to discuss pressing global environmental issues through the lenses of geospatial technology, global change, and sustainability. read more
