Purworejo, October 12, 2026 — The Master’s Program in Environmental Science at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with Muda Ganesha, an alumni association of SMA Negeri 1 Purworejo, and a UGM Master’s student research and community service team, participated in the inauguration of 11 bore wells. The initiative aims to improve access to water for drinking and agricultural purposes as part of broader efforts to strengthen national food security.

This initiative represents a collaborative effort among academic institutions, alumni, and students to apply scientific knowledge in addressing community needs. Access to reliable water resources plays a vital role in improving community well-being, maintaining agricultural productivity, and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources.
The research and community service team, involving students from UGM’s Master’s Program in Environmental Science, contributed to efforts to bridge academic knowledge with practical needs in the field. Student involvement is expected to strengthen the role of higher education institutions in supporting water resource management and raising awareness of environmental sustainability.
The water provision initiative covers several villages and beneficiary institutions: Kertosono Village, Piji Village, Girimulyo Village, State Vocational High School 4 Purworejo, Jati Village, Mayungsari Village, and Penungkulan Village. The bore wells are expected to help meet drinking water needs and support agricultural activities among communities in the beneficiary areas.

Through this collaboration, the UGM Master’s Program in Environmental Science promotes synergies among academia, alumni, and communities to develop solutions that address environmental challenges and local needs. The initiative also reflects the implementation of the university’s Tri Dharma, particularly through research and community service designed to deliver tangible benefits to society.
Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This initiative supports SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, particularly Target 6.1, which aims to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water. By improving water availability in beneficiary communities, the bore well program contributes to efforts to strengthen access to essential water resources. Its contribution to this target will also depend on ensuring that the water is safe for consumption and that the facilities remain accessible and properly maintained.
The initiative is also relevant to SDG 2: Zero Hunger, particularly Target 2.4, which promotes sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices. Access to water for agricultural activities can help support farming productivity and contribute to local food security.
In addition, the collaboration aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, particularly Target 17.17, which encourages effective partnerships among public institutions, the private sector, and civil society. The involvement of UGM, alumni, and students illustrates how cross-sector collaboration can help address community needs through the application of knowledge and shared resources.
Through this initiative, the UGM Master’s Program in Environmental Science seeks to strengthen the contribution of higher education to sustainable water resource management, community well-being, and national food security. Similar collaborations are expected to continue developing to promote environmental sustainability and support the achievement of the SDGs.
