The Doctoral Program in Environmental Science, Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), successfully conducted a Writing Workshop and Alumni Sharing Session entitled “Strategies for Completing a Doctorate on Time – Don’t Fear Publication Failures as Failure is the Best Teacher” over two days, Wednesday to Thursday, 3–4 August 2025, at the Faculty of Geography, UGM. The event featured two faculty members and four alumni from the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science as speakers. Dozens of participants from four doctoral programs at UGM—including Environmental Science, Geography, Population Studies, and Tourism Studies—attended the workshop with high enthusiasm.

The writing workshop, a regular annual agenda of the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science, aims to enhance doctoral students’ academic writing skills, particularly in preparing publications for reputable national and international journals. This session was complemented by an alumni motivation segment, providing insights on how graduates navigate and complete their doctoral studies successfully.

The workshop began with a session on academic writing for reputable national and international journals presented by Prof. Dr. Eko Haryono, M.Si., and Dr. Tjahyo Nugroho Adji, S.Si., M.Sc.Tech., both faculty members of the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science and chief editors of the Indonesian Journal of Geography. The session offered substantive guidance, equipping participants with strategies to produce high-quality scholarly work while completing their doctoral studies on time.

Following the writing session, the alumni sharing session segment featured four alumni: Dr. Vincencia Septaviani Issera S.P., S.Hut., M.P. (Bappeda West Kalimantan Province), Dr. Westi Utami, S.Si., M.Sc. (National Land College), Dr. Adnin Musadri Asbi, S.Hut., M.Sc. (ITERA), and Dr. Risman Jaya, S.Pd., M.Si. (Universitas Muhammadiyah Gorontalo). This interactive discussion allowed current students to engage directly with alumni and gain practical insights on navigating doctoral studies successfully.

In addition to strengthening academic capacity, the workshop reflects the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by enhancing doctoral students’ scientific literacy and publication capabilities. The program also reinforces principles of sustainable education and academic reflection, aligning with the education for sustainable development approach in higher education.

Through a holistic approach, the workshop not only addressed technical aspects of academic writing but also encouraged participants to internalize sustainability values in their scholarly endeavors. Speakers emphasized the importance of cultivating critical thinking, research ethics, and scientific responsibility in contributing knowledge for societal benefit and environmental sustainability. Consequently, this event served as a reflective and strategic platform for doctoral students to navigate their studies meaningfully and impactfully, consistent with UGM’s vision as a world-class research university addressing global challenges.
