The Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) officially launched the Odd Semester of Academic Year 2025/2026 by organizing a series of deficiency and field practice activities for students. These activities aim to strengthen interdisciplinary foundational knowledge and enhance students’ academic capacity in understanding complex and multidimensional environmental issues.

The one-week deficiency program featured experts from various disciplines, alumni, and UGM librarians, equipping students with essential knowledge on critical environmental issues such as climate change (SDG 13), clean water and sanitation management (SDG 6), terrestrial ecosystem restoration (SDG 15), clean and affordable energy transition (SDG 7), and partnerships for sustainable development goals (SDG 17). Dr. Sudrajat, the program coordinator, stated that the deficiency program serves as an important moment to align students’ understanding across diverse academic backgrounds and prepare them with a strong theoretical and conceptual foundation to advance their studies in environmental science and geography.

Complementing the in-class activities held from 11–15 August 2025, UGM’s Master’s Program in Environmental Science also conducted field practice on 16 August 2025 across five strategic locations: Magelang, Purworejo, and Kulon Progo. These field sessions provided students with hands-on experience to observe and analyze environmental phenomena directly.

(Event Documentation)

Each location was carefully selected to reflect various environmental challenges, including the impact of toll road development on ecosystems, community adaptation to climate change in settlements, sustainable ecotourism development, and studies on land morphology and sustainable economic practices. The activities concluded at a strategic ecotourism site with reflective discussions and student research plan presentations, marking their initial commitment to sustainability-focused environmental research.

According to Dr. Sudrajat, field practice is a crucial step in integrating theory and practice, fostering critical awareness, and enhancing students’ analytical skills in understanding the complex interactions between humans and the environment. The field experience is expected to serve as a foundational platform for students to conduct impactful research aligned with SDG targets while strengthening collaboration among academics, communities, and local governments to achieve sustainable development at both local and national levels.

UGM’s Master’s Program in Environmental Science remains committed to being a pioneer in solution-oriented and sustainability-focused environmental education, preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to research, policy, and practical actions addressing future environmental challenges.
