Yamaguchi, 27–28 February 2025 – The Master of Environmental Science Program conducted an exploratory visit to Yamaguchi University to initiate prospective international collaboration. This activity aims to strengthen academic and research partnerships between the two universities, with significant contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in natural resource management, food security, and climate change mitigation.

During the visit, the Master of Environmental Science Program discussed the development of a Double Degree program, which Yamaguchi University has previously implemented with several other partner institutions. This program enables students to obtain degrees from both universities through a special academic scheme. The initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing opportunities for students to access high-quality international education in Environmental Science. The offered courses also contribute to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), such as Disaster Mitigation, Environmental Fluid Dynamics, and Climate Change.

In addition to academic collaboration, the program also explored potential joint research initiatives organized under three main themes: Technology Development for Water Resource Management and Food Security in Addressing Climate Change; Groundwater Potential Mapping to Improve Social and Economic Well-Being through Sustainable Agricultural Practices; and Harmonizing Watershed Management to Support Food Security Programs Based on Environmental Carrying Capacity and Resilience. These research themes aim to address global challenges related to sustainable water management and food security, aligning closely with the SDG agenda.

Building upon these research collaboration opportunities, the Master of Environmental Science Program further developed the ideas into potential community engagement initiatives. Drawing on Yamaguchi University’s previous collaborative experience in Indonesia—particularly in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta on cattle farming development—the program hopes to implement similar collaborations within the community service activities previously undertaken by the Graduate School, especially in providing clean water and agricultural irrigation in Purworejo Regency.

As a follow-up, the Master of Environmental Science Program at the UGM Graduate School will begin designing the academic scheme and curriculum for the proposed Dual Degree Program with Yamaguchi University. Furthermore, regarding potential research and community engagement collaborations, both universities hope to strengthen their joint contributions toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
