PARI, Japan – In response to the growing risk of coastal disasters driven by climate change, including erosion, storm surges, and sea-level rise, the Government of Indonesia, in collaboration with Japan, organized the Green–Grey Coastal Project Training Program from 22–28 July 2026. The program was conducted under the framework of the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS), funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The training was hosted at the Port and Airport Research Institute (PARI) and various coastal sites across Japan.

The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through its Doctoral Program in Environmental Science, continues to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening students’ academic capacity by encouraging participation in international academic forums. This commitment was reflected in the participation of one of its doctoral students in the Obninsk Tech Summer University 2026, held in Obninsk, Kaluga Region, Russia, from June 21 to 27, 2026. The program was part of UGM’s Student Mobility Program, designed to broaden global perspectives, enhance academic competencies, and strengthen the University’s international academic network.
REMBANG, June 26, 2026 – Birds (avifauna) are widely recognized as sensitive biological indicators of ecosystem stability and environmental quality. To assess the ecological health of coastal ecosystems along the northern coast of Java, students from the Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a comprehensive survey of avifaunal diversity in Pasar Banggi Village, Rembang Regency, Central Java. The field research formed part of the 2026 Thematic Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL), held from June 22–25, 2026, under the supervision of Dr. Priyaji Agung Pambudi, S.Pd., M.Si. The biotic research team specializing in avifauna consisted of Jihan Kamila Wardani, Az Zahra Kania, Alief Himmatu Nisa, and Annisa Hurul Aini, who investigated bird diversity across multiple coastal habitat types to better understand ecosystem condition and inform conservation management.
Analyzing Mangrove Vegetation Community Structure to Assess Coastal Vulnerability in Rembang Regency
REMBANG, June 26, 2026 – Coastal ecosystems along the northern coast of Java play a vital role as natural barriers against coastal erosion, habitats for diverse coastal organisms, and key assets supporting mangrove-based ecotourism. Recognizing their ecological importance, students from the Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted an in-depth study on the mangrove vegetation community structure in Pasar Banggi Village, Rembang Regency, Central Java. The field research formed part of the 2026 Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL), conducted from June 22–25, 2026, under the supervision of Dr. Priyaji Agung Pambudi, S.Pd., M.Si. The biotic research team consisted of Briliana Lutfia Shinta, Yohana Nina Ke Lomi, Baso Samsu Rijal, Rabiyathul Adawiyah A., and Shinta Prastiwi, who investigated the composition and regeneration of mangrove vegetation as indicators of ecosystem health and coastal resilience.
REMBANG, June 26, 2026 – As part of efforts to support global climate change mitigation through the optimization of blue carbon potential, students from the Biotic specialization of the Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted a Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL) in the Pasar Banggi Mangrove Ecosystem, Rembang Regency, Central Java. Supervised by Dr. Emilya Nurjani, S.Si., M.Si., the research was carried out from June 22–25, 2026, focusing on carbon stock within the biotic components of coastal ecosystems.
Rembang, June 21–25, 2026 – Students from the Abiotic (Physical) specialization of the Master’s Program in Environmental Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted their 2026 Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL) in Rembang District, Rembang Regency, Central Java, focusing on the issue of seawater intrusion. The field study was supervised by Dr. Tjahyo Nugroho Adji, S.Si., M.Sc.Tech. Seawater intrusion is the process by which seawater infiltrates coastal groundwater aquifers, posing a largely invisible yet significant threat to drinking water quality, agricultural productivity, and public health. As a coastal area along the northern coast of Java, Rembang District is particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon due to intensive groundwater extraction for domestic consumption, fisheries-related industries, and agricultural activities.
Rembang, June 21–25, 2026 – Students from the Physical (Abiotic) Specialization of the Master of Environmental Science Program, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted their 2026 Field Study Program (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan – KKL) focusing on coastal erosion in Rembang Regency, Central Java, under the supervision of Dr. Tjahyo Nugroho Adji, S.Si., M.Sc.Tech. The study covered six coastal sites across four districts: Sluke Beach, Caruban Beach, Pasir Putih Wates Beach, Pantiharjo Beach, Pasar Banggi Beach, and Kabongan Lor Beach. Together, these sites extend across approximately 36.48 kilometers of the northern coastline of Java. While Rembang Regency possesses significant potential in fisheries and marine tourism, persistent coastal erosion—driven by limited coastal vegetation, seasonal wave dynamics, and expanding coastal infrastructure—has increasingly threatened shoreline stability, making comprehensive assessment and mitigation an urgent priority.
REMBANG, June 26, 2026 – The existence of coastal areas along the Northern Coast of Java is currently facing multiple and dynamic pressures, ranging from geomorphological degradation and hydrometeorological hazards to disparities in settlement spatial planning. In response to these complex challenges, the Master of Environmental Science Program of the Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), once again deployed its students through the annual thematic Field Study Program (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan – KKL), conducted from June 22 to 25, 2026. Focusing on Rembang and Pati Regencies, this year’s field program integrated a multidisciplinary approach that combined biotic, physical, and social perspectives to identify adaptation potentials and formulate sustainable regional resilience strategies.
Yogyakarta, June 5, 2026 – Preparations for the 2026 Field Study Program of the Master of Environmental Science Program continue to progress steadily. A total of 12 student delegates returned to the field to conduct the second phase of the preliminary survey, which took place over two days, from May 21 to 22, 2026. This follow-up survey focused primarily on securing administrative permits, requesting research data, and ensuring the readiness of accommodation, transportation, and lodging arrangements for all KKL participants.
In commemoration of Environmental Day 2026, which carries the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Future,” the Master’s Program in Environmental Science, Graduate School, conducted an environmental conservation activity entitled “Eco-Action, Climate Reaction: From Land to Water, We Act Together” on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in the Bompon Watershed (DAS Bompon), Kalisari Hamlet, Kalisari District, Magelang Regency, Central Java. This area has also received the highest recognition from Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) as a ProKlim Lestari village due to its excellence in water resource preservation and its ongoing tree-planting efforts around water springs.
